Emily Bute is an enamelist, metalsmith, and designer living in Brooklyn, New York.
Her one-of-a-kind work is inspired by both art dealing with Memento Mori, "Remember Death" dating back to the Renaissance, as well as current scientific findings of the modern technologies being developed to sustain life. The lines drawn between the sublimely beautiful and the disgusting are meant to be blurred in her work- a delicate hand wrought brooch series, depicts the secession pattern of an animal's decay- a platter series which elevates lesser known creatures with incredible regenerative abilities.
It is here where the ability of her medium can alter the viewer's common perception of the subject- the precious enamel object or jewelry piece has the ability to depict fly larvae with such reverence, that can incite a touched response. She utilizes both ancient metal smithing techniques as well as embracing the ability to carve with computer aided milling processes to create pieces that not only reflect upon our decorative past- but look forward to our future.
